This is Harazawa from the sales department. Although it's a little late, I hope you will continue to support "I'll sell your company!" in 2018.
Well, in this corner, we, the sales staff, will promote other companies that we think are the best as if they were our own company. This is the 8th time we have featured Think Co., Ltd.
Think is a one-stop web marketing company that provides and operates web consulting, content creation, site analysis and improvement, SEO measures, listing advertising services, etc. It is a professional team that focuses on only one company per industry and delivers reliable results.
Think and Monosus first met in 2014. At the time, Okuyama had several meetings, but things didn't go well and the order never came through.
However, Director Lu, who also appeared in today's interview, said, "Since then, a partnership with Monosus has always been on our minds," and two years later, in November 2016, the Coding Factory Division (hereinafter referred to as CF) contacted them and they decided to work with them.
In the course of working together on a number of projects, there were many inspiring experiences. First of all, every time I visited, Mr. Lu personally ground the beans and brewed the delicious coffee.
The meetings began with a relaxing aroma, and the depth of communication and the sharp feedback given after the project was completed... From their honesty, it was clear to see that Think regards CF as a valuable partner.
For me, Think is an important presence that makes me think, "I want to work with these people more." This time, we had Kenichi Ro, who first contacted CF, and Kana Hara, who helps us with daily projects, appear, and we got closer to the essence of Think, which has the message "Good colleagues and good work, forever" on its corporate website.
(Interviewer: Kensaku Saguchi)
People who participated in the interview
Noh Hyun-il:
Director, Marketing Director: "When a tiger dies, his skin remains, and when a man dies, his name remains," as the saying goes, in life too, and at work too, I want to do work that leaves a lasting impression on my customers and team members.
Kana Hara:
Account Manager Front-end Engineer I live in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture and work remotely from a corner of a ranch.
The skill I want most right now is survival skills to survive in the forest with just one knife.
Why do we take the time and effort to grind beans and brew delicious coffee for those who visit our company?
Mr. Lu grinds the beans and carefully brews the coffee.
First, I'd like to ask you about coffee. You brewed some coffee for me today, and I was really surprised at how delicious it was when I first visited you. What is your motivation for grinding the beans every time?
Mr. Lu
I think it's the best way to show hospitality to people who visit our company. I think that if people enjoy something delicious, they will relax and be more likely to talk. However, since we grind the beans, it takes time to brew the coffee, so you will have to wait (laughs).
Hara-san (left) and Lu-san (right)
-- Personally, I like that time. "It's cold today," "This is what happened at the station on the way to Shinku today," etc. As we chat a little, a nice smell starts to spread...
Mr. Lu
It certainly helps to get a feel for the day and acts as an icebreaker. We have long-standing relationships with our customers, so we have a lot to talk about other than work. So it's also a good opportunity to talk about recent developments.
-- Do you have any particular preferences for beans?
Mr. Lu
In fact, it is a product of one of our customers. It is made by someone who is arguably the best roaster in Japan, so it is very delicious. Of course, everyone has their own preferences, but I also want to spread the word about good coffee.

Hara
The person who is most particular about coffee is the president, and he has the skills of a professional barista. He makes the coffee first thing in the morning at the company. So, the people who arrive early can drink it in order.
Mr. Lu
The president comes to work about an hour and a half earlier than normal, so it feels like a reward (laughs).
In order to realize "good work with good colleagues forever," we value face-to-face feedback time.
Think always makes time for a face-to-face meeting and explains in detail the background and goals of the website production. After delivery, they also provide detailed feedback, including areas for improvement. What is the reason behind their insistence on thorough communication?
Mr. Lu
If what you just said has been conveyed, we would be very grateful. It's a little difficult to explain, but we work with the idea that "we are chosen by our customers, and we also choose our customers." If the customer's product or service is not good, it is difficult to market it, and if we are not confident, we cannot recommend it.
This is the same when we are in the position of a customer, and rather than placing an order with Monosus, we have a strong sense of wanting to create something together as partners. Naturally, if we want to be good partners, it is better to share goals and situations and work together, and I think that leads to better results.
Hara
"Good colleagues and good work, forever" is the policy posted on our website. We want to bring out the best in each other as partners and have a long-term relationship. I think that in itself is a wonderful thing, so I try to communicate closely and become closer to good colleagues.
Mr. Lu
So when people ask me, "How many staff do you have?" I'm at a loss for an answer. We have built close relationships with external partners, so we don't have a sense of "outside" anymore. So when I hear "staff," the faces of many of our colleagues come to mind in addition to our own employees.
-- To be honest, when I receive feedback from you, I feel a mixture of warmth and loving strictness, so it makes me quite nervous...
Mr. Lu
No matter how good your personal relationship is, it's important to be able to produce results that you can both be satisfied with. This may sound harsh, but a work relationship is also based on the ability to produce results.
And because we believe that relationships develop over time, we value feedback.
Hara
If there are any areas where your company is having difficulty moving forward, we will make the necessary adjustments, and we hope to create a favorable situation for both of us so that we can do good work. I think that if we can provide each other with feedback, rather than just making something, we can become good partners.
Mr. Lu
If you don't give feedback, it will be a one-time relationship. Of course, I think there are companies out there who think it is more efficient to cut down on the time and effort of feedback. But our company is not very large, so if cutting out a couple of hours of feedback doesn't deepen our relationship with our partners, that is a bigger loss.
The company's number one philosophy is individual happiness. We want to cherish the people we are connected to.
Although we have been in frequent contact with the two of them through projects, it had been a long time since I had met Hara-san face-to-face. The reason is that he moved to Shimane Prefecture after getting married. He now works remotely using an iPad. I think that creating these internal systems and environments is one of the elements that makes Think an attractive team.
Mr. Lu
The company's number one principle is the happiness of the individual. What kind of company can make individuals happy? Every system we create is centered around that idea.
Therefore, we ask staff with children to focus on their children, and we take responsibility for adjusting their schedules. However, there are naturally periods when the company gets very busy. When schedules get tight, we explain that it is necessary for our clients and say, "Let's work hard together." On the other hand, we try to lighten the burden when there is more room in the schedule. Even on weekdays, they can go to a concert of their favorite singer or visit an art museum. Many people pursue what they like, and I think there is a lot of freedom in how they spend their time.
-- Monosus has also introduced a full-flex system, trying to let individuals take responsibility for how they use their time. However, it's not all good, and there are also situations where discrepancies arise. How do you balance the freedom of workers with individual responsibility?
Mr. Lu
Some people know the value of freedom like full flextime and can use it well, but others don't like it. In our company, we basically set rules that everyone must follow, and when they want to move freely at the necessary times, they can adjust it at that time.
For example, the time to come to work is fixed, and there is a morning meeting. This is a core time that cannot be changed, so that schedules can be shared and moved around. The most important thing we consider in our evaluations is deadlines. Weekly and monthly schedules are shared, and deadlines must be met. Although the place of work is free, I think the sense of responsibility is high.
Hara
I'm based in Shimane, but of course I attend morning meetings and stay connected through my iPad screen all day during work hours.
Mr. Lu
Currently, three staff members are working in the same format as Hara, but we chat through the screen and it is important to stay connected. This also helps convey the atmosphere of the company.
- The first time I met you was through an iPad screen.
Hara
It's amazing, isn't it? I think the world will become more and more like this.
A remote system using iPads for telecommuting members. You can change the line of sight 360 degrees, so it feels like you're in the same office even when you're far away.
- Is the reason you create an environment where people can work from home because you want to value the staff who are so connected to you?
Mr. Lu
There is a school of thought that says to provide a fulfilling environment and hire people who are attracted to it, but we want to value the people we are connected with first. They are people we need, and if we can cooperate by creating an environment that is mutually satisfying, we will continue to improve.
Of course, this kind of environment can be an attractive factor when hiring. However, the priority was to "keep important people at the company."
Hara
The president uses the expression "Sink Village," and at first I was a bit worried, wondering if I could really be a villager from Shimane. But when I tried it, I found that even when I was there, I felt like I was in an office in Tokyo.
Mr. Lu
This makes me feel like I'm in Shimane. I can hear the cows mooing through her screen (laughs).
Hara
I married into a family that runs a farm. There are a lot of cows, and when it's feeding time, they moo from the barn. People say they're noisy.
Mr. Lu
Sometimes when I lose focus, he disappears from the screen saying "I'm going for a walk" and then shows me a photo he took with a cow (laughs).
- Sink Village is great.
Hara
Whenever someone is in trouble, we lend each other a hand. If someone runs out of soy sauce, we'll bring some, and that's the kind of relationship we have where we cover for each other.
Mr. Lu
Fortunately, we have gathered such friends, and we came here because we wanted to gather such people. The president comes from a large company, so the company is well-established as a corporate organization, but there is also the fun of a venture. Right now, the balance is very good. However, a good balance also means that it is difficult to break, so the task of expanding while maintaining it is very difficult. The hurdle for hiring has also risen, and that is an issue. However, once you enter the village, I think it is a good place to live.
How do we share responsibilities with our partners? We spend a lot of time building relationships.
Whenever I have a meeting with Mr. Roh and Mr. Hara, I feel that they "maximize the good points of CF." For example, I get the impression that they make good use of CF by making partial requests, such as coding part of a template. In addition, they always consider several options for estimates, and make accurate and speedy selections. I feel that this kind of response is also characteristic of Think, who has a deep understanding of their partners.
Mr. Lu
This is not limited to Monosus, but it takes time to first create a work structure and build relationships with each other. To what extent do you and your partner share responsibility? You have to decide the scope of responsibility.
For example, I think people tend to think that the reason we asked Monosus to do some of the coding for our templates is to cut costs. But that's not the case.
It would be ideal if everyone at CF could accompany us to our clients, but that's difficult. Therefore, we take responsibility for carefully understanding the client's intentions and goals, and we want our partner, Monosus, to approach production in a light-footed manner. If the line is unclear, I think it will be difficult for both parties to move forward.
Hara
Although the structure of the site is important in web marketing, our clients do not need complicated designs. Therefore, as long as there is a basic concept and a template of the movement, there are no major problems with the production itself. Also, from experience, we know "what we should do for our clients now."
However, because the production team has limited resources, we rely heavily on Monosus when we have multiple production projects at the same time or when we need to catch up on the latest technology. The check team in particular is extremely talented. I feel that we are partners who can utilize each other's strengths.
That being said, I still don't think we've found the best balance, and I think we'll continue to communicate and experiment in the future.
Mr. Lu
Regarding the production team's resources, the president's policy is, "We are not a company that specializes in website production, so we limit the production team's resources to just enough to properly understand what the client wants and enable them to realize it smoothly. When we have multiple orders or need to keep up with the latest technology, we cooperate with reliable parties that are good at it."
In that regard, your company has the Monosasu website as well as a monthly newsletter that conveys the latest trends and technologies that we should keep up with.
It's rare to find a company that is so forthcoming. There are some companies that sell themselves on cheapness and speed, but to be honest, that doesn't convey the appeal of the company. It's very reassuring to have them communicate what their thoughts are, what they do, and what concerns they have as a partner. I look forward to continuing to work with them.
Shogo Harazawa's "This is what I want to sell!"
Listening to the story about coffee, I was reminded that Think really cares about its partners. I think the essence of the job is to be able to confidently tell people that something is really good because it's really good.
I felt a sense of responsibility when I thought that we, as partners, were playing a part in the production of Think, who thinks like that. On top of that, there are three points about Think that make me want to sell to them even more:
- A comfortable tension between partners who respect each other
- An attitude of thinking about what a company should be for the happiness of individuals
- A "village" feel with flexible systems and fun-loving friends
I feel grateful every day while working with Think. They said, "Our production team has limited resources, and we are not very good at following the latest technology or checking. But we can do this," and I was impressed by their willingness to partner with a company that can fit our needs perfectly.
And, to be honest, I was envious of the fact that they spoke seriously about how a company should be and how individuals should be in order to achieve personal happiness. In an age where "work styles" are getting a lot of attention, I thought it must be a comfortable "village."
When a company tries to support the happiness of its employees, happy employees create new value and give back to the company and society. I feel like I have caught a glimpse of this cycle of happiness.
I look forward to interacting with you again, enjoying a pleasant atmosphere over delicious coffee.
