WOOD STOCK YARD
Developed a new application for calculating complex shipping fees. An e-commerce site that sells unused materials and is API-linked to Shopify.

Summary
This project aims to find new value in unused wood stored in lumber companies' stockyards. It will be launched as "WOOD STOCK YARD" in August 2022.
In addition to disseminating information about the project, we created a website that also functions as an online shop that sells deadstock lumber. The EC platform used for this project was Shopify. We developed an app in-house to handle the complicated settings for calculating shipping fees for lumber deliveries, and expanded the functionality by integrating with the API.
Issue
Deadstock materials can be a treasure trove

This project was born when I met a lumber company in Shinkiba, Tokyo in 2019 and learned about the current situation of unused wood lying dormant in a stockyard. Many lumber companies have a large stock of wood that is not the standard size, has large knots, or is out of spec for some reason. It is difficult to treat trees that grow in nature over a long period of time like industrial products, so they remain piled up in large quantities as deadstock wood that is not available to the general public at home centers and other places. Inspired by unique wood, they make things. If they reach people with such sensibilities, the deadstock wood will surely become a treasure trove. With this in mind, Wood Stock Yard began its work under the slogan "Let's create fun with unused wood."
Plan & Output
Customize your EC platform to enable complex shipping calculations

The reason why deadstock lumber is not utilized is not because it is difficult to handle or has poor quality, but simply because it has not reached those who want it. In order to let more people know the joy of wood that cannot be experienced with standard lumber, we started creating a website that will publish various DIY content articles, as well as an e-commerce site that sells deadstock lumber. The most difficult part of building the site was the part about shipping calculations. Unlike the products commonly handled in online shops, wood does not have a standard length or weight that can be delivered, and shipping fees are set based on complex calculations that involve various conditions, so we found that even the basic functions of Shopify itself and plugins that allow for expansion settings could not cover it all. However, we wanted to somehow automatically calculate shipping fees at the time of purchase. As we proceeded with the construction of the site, we repeatedly consulted with engineers, revised and standardized the conditions, and then developed a new API app, which allowed us to realize the strong desire that we had from the beginning of the construction of the site.
Result
Enjoy your favorite ingredients more smoothly and with more enjoyment.

As a result of linking a newly developed app to the EC site via API, it is now possible to display the shipping calculation amount in the cart. Although individual estimates may be required depending on the length of the lumber and some other conditions, we have been able to handle this on the EC site in order to automatically calculate shipping costs, and have succeeded in building a site that allows for smooth shopping. Please take a look at the website and find your favorite lumber. We also offer DIY projects, so we hope you will enjoy reading the content articles.
