The browser is a coder's development tool!
Introducing some lesser known features of the browser

Hello.
Coding Factory Department Coder's Gold.

What browser do you usually use?
There are many people who are not that interested in computers, or who don't care about the OS (Windows or Mac) but don't care about the browser.
For us coders, the browser is not just a place to search or shop on the web, it's an essential tool for our work in creating higher quality sites.

For example, I test the pages I've coded in each browser. Each browser has many useful features for developers, but you can use the browser's existing developer tools to try out different colors and movements. You can also check the loading time of pages and files, so I think many coders consider the browser a development tool.

Testing the page with Google Chrome 's Developer Tools

Today we'll introduce you to a little-known browser and its features.

First, get to know "Chromium"

Google Chrome is the most widely used desktop browser in the world, accounting for 50% of all browsers. The Google browser is an open source browser called Chromium, and the number of Chromium-based browsers has been increasing recently.

Vivladi , which we will introduce this time, as well as Opera , Brave , Blisk , Yandex browser , and others are developed with Chromium, so I think it is necessary to first know about Chromium in order to understand modern browsers.

Google Chrome has been developed and undergoes various tests to ensure it is stable and easy to use for general users.
Chromium is an open source that anyone can use for development. Strictly speaking, it is not the same as Google Chrome, but it is updated daily and is often considered a beta version of Google Chrome, being two versions older. Chrome Canary, which is for developers, can use future Google Chrome features, but it is still under development, so it is quite unstable and prone to crashes and other problems. It is two versions older than Chromium, so if you want to try out the new features of Google Chrome, I recommend using Google Chrome Canary.

Chrome for Developers Chrome Canary

Chromium is an open source web browser released by Google Chrome. In fact, Chromium and Google Chrome are similar, but there are three differences between them:

  1. Chromium does not have automatic updates.
  2. Adobe Flash Player is not included, so you will need to install it.
  3. Since it is open source, anyone can develop based on Chromium.

As you can see, there are actually three types of Chrome.

Vivaldi

Vivaldi is a Chromium-based browser developed primarily by Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, one of the founders of the Opera browser.
Since both Google Chrome and Vivaldi are based on Chromium, it may be better to use Google Chrome, which you are more familiar with, but Vivaldi also has the following features:

1. Free browser layout!!

Other browsers allow you to change the background color and add your favorite themes, but you cannot freely change the layout of the browser. However, Vivaldi allows you to change the position of tabs, address bars, settings panels, and even bookmarks. This is a great feature for people who often customize browser themes and settings, allowing you to set up your own unique browser screen.

2. Quick Commands

Quick Commands is a feature that allows you to control Vivaldi by typing, and I think it is a useful feature for people who prefer typing to using a mouse.
Press cmd + e on a Mac or F2 on Windows to open the command panel, where you can quickly search for currently open tabs, bookmarks, history and settings, and control everything related to Vivaldi using commands, so it's a feature you should definitely make use of when using Vivaldi.
If you want to control your browser more precisely, including page movement and scrolling, I recommend adding an extension called Vimium from the Chrome Web Store. (Since Vivaldi is based on Chromium, you can use the Chrome Store!)

3. Tab Management

When searching, you may open too many tabs in your browser, and lose track of which ones you have opened, or you may accidentally delete a tab and have to search again. Vivaldi makes it easy to manage tabs and combine them into one. You can also preview the contents of a tab by placing the mouse cursor over it, which makes it easy to understand. You can also split and display one tab on the monitor screen, so you can combine similar sites, or developers like coders can use it to view multiple pages.

Opera

Opera is not a new browser, but it has been around for as long as IE and FireFox, but it was a unique browser with its own functions and direction. It also had its own engine, which required separate support during development, so it was an unpopular browser among developers.
However, since 2013, Opera, which was developed using its own proprietary technology, has been reborn as a Chromium-based browser.

1. YouTube videos open in a new window

I often watch YouTube, so this is a feature I use, but it allows me to do other things while watching the video. For example, I use a site called Codepen, which allows you to try out simple HTML and CSS in your browser, to play videos I find on YouTube or programming learning sites and code while looking at the code. I also think it's a useful feature when watching videos of my favorite artists or when using videos on the web as a reference.

2. VPN service is easy!!

Normally, to use a VPN service, I would have to install a dedicated VPN app or use a Google Chrome extension, but Opera is easy to use with basic settings. Some functions are more limited than the dedicated app, but since the capacity is unlimited, I don't think there will be any problems with web searches or YouTube access that can only be viewed in certain countries.

In addition to Vivaldi and Opera, there are various other browsers such as the text-only browser Lynx , the developer browser Blisk , and the lightweight domestic browser Lunascape .
In the past, Windows IE was the most commonly used browser, but now there are many browsers that specialize in speed and special functions.

Conclusion

When I first decided to become a coder, I was very surprised to learn about the different types of browsers there are. I remember that the site I created looked fine in Chrome, but the layout was messed up in IE and it was hard to fix.
In particular, as smartphones have become more popular, the creation of responsive websites has increased, making compatibility with each browser very important.
Other than IE and Safari, Chrome and Firefox are currently the most popular browsers, but these browsers were also unknown in the past.
A browser that is unknown today may one day become a big trend.
And above all, I think knowing about new browsers will be useful knowledge for me as a coder in the future.

It's hard to keep up with the rapid changes in the IT industry, not just in browsers, but also because there are more and more options available. Browsers are being developed every day, and many convenient functions are now available.
By taking a moment to research the functions of the browser you use and customizing it to make it easier for you to use, you may be able to use your browser more conveniently in your work and personal life.
