Monosus Thailand Staff Interview #03
How coder Ploy works and why she returned to Monosus

2016.09.14 | PEOPLE

#Thailand

The third staff interview from Monosus Thailand is with coder Ploy, who has been highly praised by Japanese web directors for being easy to work with.
Like Mong, who was interviewed in June #02 , she is a member who once left Monosus but later returned.
She is a mood maker who usually has the most energetic laughter and smile of anyone. And yet she also receives high praise for her work.
We investigated the roots of this popular working style and attitude.

From leaving Monosus to returning

Miyagawa
I was surprised that Ploy left at the end of the year and returned after just three months, but what surprised me even more was that on the day he left he made hats with the company name on them for everyone.
It's unthinkable from a Japanese perspective. What was that all about?

Ploy
There was nothing special about it, but when I was hanging out shopping with my boyfriend, I had the idea that I wanted to give everyone something. His sister happened to work in that field, so I decided to have her make something to order.
I thought it would be nice to have something I could use anytime.
Since my quit date was approaching, I asked him to make it within three days (laughs).
I actually wanted a different color, but that was all they had.

A gift exchange party on the day of retirement. Everyone was wearing the same monosus cap. Filmed by Ploy with his newly purchased GoPro.

Miyagawa: It's true that it's flashy and I thought it would be hard to find someone to wear it (laughs). But honestly, I was really happy. I thought, why go to all this trouble if you're quitting?

Ploy
Thai people don't think too deeply about quitting.
I just give gifts because I want to, and do things for others because I want to do things for them.
At the time, I never thought I'd ever come back.

You will be returning to Miyagawa in three months, but can I ask you again about the circumstances of your job change?

Ploy
I wasn't particularly dissatisfied with Monosus, but I wanted a change of scenery. However, I didn't get along with the people at the new company.

MiyagawaWhat was the company you transferred to like?

Ploy
There were often drinking parties. Sometimes people would drink beer even during work.
I can't drink alcohol, so it didn't suit me (laughs).
I couldn't make any friends because I didn't have a compatible personality.
So I was always so quiet and it felt like I wasn't myself.
I wasn't happy, I was in pain, and I cried and talked to my friends and my mom about it.
But now that I'm back at Monosus, I have friends who I get along with, I can do all the things I like, the atmosphere is great, and I'm happy.

Miyagawa: Have you ever considered applying to a different company?

Ploy
I didn't think about it at all because I wanted to work with everyone again.
Everyone there is so kind and I feel at ease, and it feels like we're all family now.

Unique word sense. Mother's presence

Miyagawa : Everyone gets along well, but I think having Ploy there really brightens up the company.
After the company cafeteria, we all took pictures together, played games, and played badminton. It looked like a lot of fun. He also took the initiative to think about the destination for the company trip.

It was difficult to get a spot on the court in the early hours, so badminton was still going strong even at 11pm.

Ploy
I'm a positive person, so I like to joke around and liven things up, and I hope to make the people around me happy every day in the same way.
However, I have a tendency to say exactly what I'm thinking in my own words, so sometimes it's hard for people to understand what I'm trying to say (laughs).

Miyagawa ? What do you mean?

Ploy
I think it's normal, but the way I express myself is a bit unusual.
For example, the other day I went with a friend to buy a GoPro cover, but I didn't know what it was called, so I said I wanted to buy the "Poppe Poppe" one.
But it didn't get through to me at all (laughs).

Miyagawa : What? Pop, pop, pop (laughs).

Ploy
I'm talking about the lid on the GoPro case (laughs).
There's no word for it, but there's a pop-pop-pop sound that you hear when you open the cover. So you should be able to tell just from the name (laughs).

People can understand if I explain it to them, but the words that come out of their mouths often are like that, and it seems everyone is confused.
When I'm surprised, I often say "Meeho meeho," which means "Mom is going to fall," and it seems like it's a phrase that only I use (laughs).

Miyagawa: You make up your own words (laughs).
That's unusual. It's an interesting personality trait.

Come to think of it, I heard before that your mother drives you to and from the station every day when you go to work; she must be a very kind mother.

Ploy
My mother cares very much for me.
My parents divorced when I was still a baby and I didn't meet my dad until I went to college, but my mom was enough for me.
However, my parents worried about me a lot, so I had to come home immediately after school and didn't get to play with my friends much as a child.
My mother even said she didn't want me to go on our recent company trip to Krabi.

Ploy
However, I went on trips to many places with my family and relatives, and my mother supported me in all of the things I liked and my studies.

I had a rebellious phase and a time when I wanted to be free, but in my mother's eyes, I was always a child. Now that I'm an adult, I understand how my mother felt.
So if I have children, I think I'll raise them the same way.

How Coder Ploy works

Miyagawa
Ploy's work ethic has been highly praised by Japanese directors, but I wonder if his mother's education has had a big influence on this?

Ploy
I learned a lot about how to work through various experiences I had as an adult.
When I joined the company, I chose to work in a field that I could do, but once I started, I realized how little I knew.
Thanks to the support of my seniors, I was able to learn and understand more and more.
If there was something I didn't understand, I would consult with someone right away.
I found the most enjoyable part was writing the CSS and creating it as well as the design.
When a new kid joins, I want to teach them everything I've been taught, starting from the basics.

Miyagawa
Ploy has a reputation among Japanese people for being "quick to work" and "always trying things out before asking questions or making suggestions." Is there anything you pay particular attention to when working?

Ploy
My seniors taught me how to do my job during my early projects, but I think the most important things are to "keep to time" and "improve your skills every day."
If I don't finish it, I feel stressed and pressured. I don't want to be told anything bad about my slow work, and because it's work, I have to improve my skills every day. I want to grow more and more.

Miyagawa: It's true that Ploy comes in early in the morning and always leaves on time.

Ploy
My boyfriend is a civil servant and finishes work at 3pm every day, so he's waiting for me, so I have to finish on time (laughs). He drives me home every day.

Miyagawa: So that was one of the reasons. (Laughs)

Ploy
I have a habit of getting up at 7:20 in the morning and getting to the station by 8:30 to head to work. I don't want to be late, so I eat breakfast at work.

Miyagawa :I see. And if you can leave work at 6pm, your boyfriend or your mother will be waiting for you. (Laughs)

Ploy loves traveling, so I'd love to go out with everyone again.

Ploy
I want to go to lots of different places with everyone from my company.
It can be somewhere nearby, Koh Lipe or even Japan. Can you take me there? (laughs)

After the interview

She is the first one to arrive in the morning and the first one to leave in a flash. And yet, her work ethic is highly praised, which seems like an ideal way to work.
The most striking thing that struck me during the interview was the words, "My mother was enough."
It is said that Thai people are kind to children, but I truly feel that this is a comment that comes from growing up with deep love from their mothers.
I'd like to thank Ploy's mother for raising him to be a great, energetic kid who loves coding.
