Warm your heart with music on cold winter days
~Songs to listen to on a winter day, selected by Monosus members~

According to the calendar, we are now entering the period of "light snow," when reports of snow are beginning to arrive from the northern lands.
There may be many people who are feeling unwell.

In the morning, I feel a little hesitant to get out of bed, and at Monosus, more people are wearing masks, so I feel like we are entering a season where taking care of our health is even more important.

But having the perfect music for a cold winter's day can help change your mood just a little.
It's nice to go outside and take in the crisp winter air, or to relax in a warm room... It's strange how it makes you feel like enjoying a winter day.

Today, we asked our music-loving members to tell us about songs that would be nice to listen to on a cold winter's day.

Wrapped in a blanket, the soothing sounds fill my body with happiness.
Brian Eno: Ambient 1: Music for Airports

Natsumi Tanaka (Director/Coder)

Brian Eno "Ambient 1: Music for Airports" Astralwerks (2004/10/5) ( Amazon )

Winter. I hate the cold, so just hearing the word makes me depressed. I really don't care about snow. Ah, I don't want to go outside or move around as much as possible.

So, as I enjoy spending the cold season relaxing and quietly at home, I would like to recommend Brian Eno's "Ambient 1: Music for Airports."
Brian Eno is a pioneer of ambient music, also known for the startup sound of Windows 95. This album by him is a masterpiece with a very pleasant sound.

You can feel the sound slowly seeping into your brain and entire body, and your head gradually becomes empty...it's an indescribably soothing feeling.

While playing this on a player at home, turn on the heater, cover yourself with a blanket, drink hot water (I think herbal tea or hot water is more suitable than coffee for this album), and just spend time thinking about nothing. If you get tired of hot water, slowly sip on warm wine... Hmm, winter isn't so bad.

This is a piece that I would highly recommend to anyone who likes to travel alone or be indoors.

From the ordinary to the extraordinary
musette "Datum"

Ryohei Asada (Designer)

musette “Datum” p*dis (2009/10/8) ( Amazon )

The moment I heard this album, a whole new world opened up before me.

Under a crisp, clear winter sky.
In the streets of Europe, middle-aged men are casually drinking whiskey.
They were performing on the street. I felt that this was an ordinary, everyday scene.

But that's not how I want to listen to this song.

Early morning on a holiday.
It's cloudy outside and it looks like it's going to rain, but it's not.
It's best to listen to it when you don't have any plans to get stuck and you're leisurely starting to prepare breakfast.
In the pleasant weather, I felt the scene of the men playing.
I was filled with excitement about what I would do on a sunny day later.
For now, I'll just slowly munch on some bread and drink my coffee.

This is a recommended piece for winter mornings like that.

The clear air and the shining starry sky make you feel like you can run forever.
Exlovers 『Starlight, Starlight』

Takanori Handa (Director)

Exlovers “Starlight, Starlight” Young & Lost Club (2012/4/4) ( Amazon )

I would like to introduce "Starlight, Starlight" by the London indie band Exlovers. Although the title evokes images of night, there are no words about winter in the lyrics, and it is not clear what season it is set in, but when I listen to this song, I think of a starry night shining in the clear winter air.

The beautiful, clear vocals of the singer, the reverberation and floating feeling reminiscent of shoegaze, and the sparkling guitar pop sound are very comfortable and light-hearted, but I think the slightly lonely melody also plays a part in conjuring such a scene.

With this image in mind, I used to run with this song playing in the background. I love feeling the cold of a winter night on my skin and watching the scenery change along with the fast-paced sound of this song, and it makes me feel like I can run forever.

Excited and sparkling.
I'll put this on my December playlist and walk around town
Perfume "Have a Stroll"

Yukari Furuhata (Marketing Department)

Perfume "JPN" Tokuma Japan Communications (2011/11/30) ( Amazon )

"Have a Stroll" is a song by Perfume, with the title "Taking a walk" or "Wandering around". It is included in the album "JPN". There are no words in the lyrics that make you think of winter, but for me, it is a song that makes me want to listen to it in the winter.

It all started a few years ago when I went to the Conran Shop during the Christmas season. As I was wandering around looking at the beautifully decorated store, this song started playing. (Of course, it wasn't played in the store, it was on my iPhone.) The song perfectly matched the excited mood I was in at the time, and my excitement was doubled. Since then, I've added this to my December playlist, and it has become a staple song for winter outings.

Stay healthy with music even during the cold winter!

What do you think of these songs that are great to listen to on a winter's day?

There are warm sounds to enjoy on a cloudy winter morning when you're not yet awake, and sounds that resonate throughout your body and make you start to like winter, even though you hate it. There are guitar pop sounds that make you want to run as fast as you can through the cold air, and songs that are perfect for walking excitedly through a city sparkling with illuminations. Each of the four artists chose songs with various winter scenes in mind.

Even on those chilly days, music can help cheer you up.
Keep your body and mind warm and get through the winter!
