Between fall of last year and June of this year, 10 new members joined Monosus.
This was my first time being involved in recruitment, from recruiting to interviews, so I had a strong feeling for it and wanted all 10 people to work at Monosus for a long time.
When I attended an online seminar for human resources personnel, I heard that because of the coronavirus pandemic and remote work, new employees are unable to communicate with senior employees and feel lonely.
Certainly, if you go to the office, you can naturally communicate with people when you pass them by saying things like, "Oh! You're the new employee, Mr. XX. What did you do in your previous job?" or "I'm the new employee. Nice to meet you!" But with teleworking, you can't do that. There's no way a new employee can say, "Hey, Mr. XX, would you like to chat online?"
That's not good! Something has to be done!!!
That's what made me think about doing this "Welcome, newbies! (Katsura Sanshi style) Vertical and Horizontal Edition!"
Horizontal connections. First, newcomers say hello to each other.
Anyway, I thought, let's connect new people with everyone!
First of all, it's about building connections between new recruits. I hope that we can create connections like those of our peers.
I joined the company as a new graduate at the same time as my co-workers, and we overcame hard times together and experienced fun times together, so we are still very close and have become friends that we can truly trust. I hope that the new employees at Monosus will be able to do the same.
We asked Masayuki Aoki ( introduction article , website ), who is well known for "facilitating meetings, both in person and online, from family meetings to international conferences," to be the facilitator, and planned a networking event for five new employees and three senior employees.

Aoki-san gave us a theme in advance, saying "Please choose three photos." The three photos were as follows.
■Photo 1: Where I grew up ■Photo 2: This is what I did in my previous job ■Photo 3: What I like
While sharing these three pictures on the screen, we introduced ourselves, told each other the nicknames we have been called, and the nicknames we would like to be called. We asked questions if we were interested, and chatted to get to know each other. Some people showed us photos from when they were little, and we got excited, saying, "So cute!"
They were shy at first, but soon they started calling each other by nicknames. At the end, I took a screenshot, and I could see that everyone was smiling and having fun.
Participants' impressions

"I haven't had a chance to talk to everyone recently, so I'm glad I had the chance to get to know everyone." (Yamamoto Yuya)

"It was a time when I didn't know what to do, so it was a chance for me to get to know the personalities of the Monosus employees." (Takahiro Matsumoto)

"Since I joined the company, I haven't had many opportunities to network with other new employees, so I was happy to see this project." (Ryo Takashima)
Vertical connections. Hello to all my seniors.
After horizontal, we move to vertical. In order to create vertical connections, we decided to have all the senior employees visit the rooms we had prepared in an online conference tool where the new employees were. This was a plan that Harada, a senior employee, came up with.
The new employees are divided into three groups and asked to stay in a room for two hours, with senior employees then visiting each room at a time convenient to them to chat.
We shared brief profiles of the new recruits with senior employees in advance to serve as an opportunity for conversation.
Since it doesn't fit into Monosus' corporate culture, we didn't make it compulsory for employees to participate, so we were worried that senior employees might not visit very often. However, when we tried it, it turned out that this wasn't necessary, and each room seemed to have a surprisingly good time.
Participants' impressions

"It was great to be able to meet almost all the members of Monosasu. I was glad that some people even prepared questions for me. With people coming and going in succession, the atmosphere of wondering who was coming and what we might talk about felt real in a way, and I enjoyed it. Since it's difficult to gather everyone together, I'm really grateful and glad that they were able to create a place for interaction in this way!" (Taro Sakakibara)

"It was fun to be able to interact with various seniors. I've only met them at general meetings up until now, but I've never had a chance to talk to them, so I'm glad they organized this event. I thought it would take a long time, but the time flew by, so I think it would be good to have a similar amount of time the next time we meet." (Shirakawa Daiki)

"I'm not very good at speaking online, so I was nervous, but the employees were very easy to talk to, and the two hours went by in a flash. In fact, it made me even more eager to meet and talk with them. Although the COVID-19 situation is difficult, it gave me something to look forward to when things have calmed down. I'm grateful to the people who created this opportunity. Thank you very much." (Iino Naoki)
Sharing experiences, Kamiyama training camp
From newcomer Asanuma-kun:
"Can even new employees do satellite work at the Kamiyama satellite office?"
It all started when I received a question:
Monosus has a system that subsidizes up to 30,000 yen for people who want to do satellite work at a satellite office, if they meet certain conditions. The three new employees who work in Yoyogi took advantage of this and wanted to work at the Kamiyama satellite office. After that, they were asked, "What if we stayed for about two weeks and had a kind of training camp?", and in the end, the three new employees spent the entire first half of July at the Kamiyama satellite office.
I was very curious as to what it was like for them to spend two weeks in the same room as adults, eating from the same pot and sharing their meals and sleeping quarters...but when they returned, despite my worries, they told me all sorts of stories about their time in Kamiyama and it seemed like they had a really fun and worthwhile experience.

Try "Welcome, newbie!"
At Monosus, where many of the members are mid-career hires, I don't often hear the word "doujinshi" (classmates), but I think that the newcomers were able to be conscious of being "doujinshi" (classmates) at the horizontal networking meetings. It seems that some of them have remained friendly with each other since then, so I hope they will treasure those bonds.
At the vertical connection meeting between new employees and senior employees, I went around to all the rooms, and many new employees and senior employees were in the same room, talking about things they like and having a good time. Although the venue was online, there was a party atmosphere, and I saw some people I hadn't seen in a while, and I think it was good for the senior employees to meet each other.
My personal impression is that in the past, the process for joining a company was that we received a company-wide explanation from headquarters, and then each department would start training, so unless you were in the same department, there wasn't much opportunity to talk about private matters...You gradually got to know each other and become friends through company events, etc., but by carrying out this project, that all came together in one go, and I felt like I was able to get to know everyone quickly, although not all of them.
And above all, I thought it was great that all the senior employees were able to create a welcoming atmosphere for the new employee!
