Hello. This is Saito from the Quality Control Department. June 4th is "Tooth Cavity Prevention Day."
This time, the editorial department asked me to write an article about preventing cavities and periodontal disease, since I am a qualified dental hygienist.
I have been working in a dental clinic for over 10 years, and even now, on my days off, I help out at my mentor's dental clinic. Although the methods and items of care vary for each person depending on their age and condition, I hope that this article will be of some help to those who read it in their daily lives. I would like to share with you a little of what I usually tell my patients.
Three useful points to know
I think that those who have received tooth brushing instructions may already know about oral care. However, when I ask people around me, I am surprised to hear that they "didn't know!" So, I would like to narrow it down to three points for effective oral care and share them with you.
POINT 1. Try holding a toothbrush! The trick is to hold it like a pencil!

If you hold it like you're holding a pencil, you can relax it and it will feel just right.
First, how to hold your toothbrush. Instead of making a fist, hold it smartly, like holding a pencil. This way, you can release excess force and naturally brush your teeth with just the right amount of pressure.
When I ask people around me at work, many of them say, "I brushed my teeth with my fist!", and I see people brushing their teeth with their fist after their lunch break. That's not to say that it's bad, but I recommend using a pencil grip because it's a simple way to gently care for your teeth and gums, which you touch every day.
Also, if you are brushing too hard or your gums are soft, try imagining brushing tofu. It will be easier to imagine brushing gently.
POINT 2. Let's polish it! Aim for the 2mm pocket!

Brush the 2mm pocket at the base of the tooth, placing the toothbrush at an angle.
In addition to brushing your teeth as you would normally do to prevent cavities, we recommend brushing your teeth at a slight angle with your toothbrush, toward your gums.
This is because there are small pockets (about 2 mm) between the teeth and gums where dirt tends to accumulate. This angle also massages the gums, making it very effective in preventing periodontal disease.
I have gotten into the habit of brushing my teeth while looking in the mirror to check this angle. I smile every day and think, "The dirt is coming off!" and "My gums look healthy!" (laughs)
POINT 3. Feel refreshed at the dentist! Even just a cleaning is fine!

Dentists are your best ally! Professional cleanings can help keep your teeth healthier.
In fact, you can go to the dentist not only to have your cavities treated, but also to have your teeth cleaned. Even if you don't have cavities or pain, you can still go to the dentist!
We can remove tartar and stains that you cannot remove yourself, as well as any dirt that has been overlooked, and give your teeth a thorough cleaning, so please feel free to visit us.
You will also be taught how to brush your teeth, so brushing your teeth at home will become much easier with a focus on the key points. You may be thinking, "How do I brush my teeth? How do I use it?" even though I'm an adult now, but I'm serious. Please listen to the "best care method for your mouth." It's worth it for the rest of your life!
We also recommend that you visit your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned and checked. People often ask, "Do I need to visit every three months?" but the frequency really varies from person to person. Your dentist will suggest the optimal frequency based on the condition of your teeth and gums, so don't be afraid to ask your dentist about anything.
A refreshing item that will take your tooth brushing to the next level!
We have introduced three great tips for basic care, but for those who want to take it up a notch, we have a recommended item. It is a powerful item that will drastically reduce the risk of cavities and periodontal disease and will definitely leave you feeling refreshed.
1. Dental floss is the best when wrapped around your finger!
The first one is dental floss. There are many kinds available at drugstores, but they can be broadly divided into two types: one where you wrap the thread around your finger, and one where the thread is attached to a holder.

This type involves wrapping the thread around your fingers. Once you get used to it, this is the most efficient method.

This is the holder type. If you are a beginner, this might be a good place to start.
For the finger-wrapped type, you just need to thread the floss between your teeth, following the curve of your teeth. It fits your teeth so it removes all the dirt. Of course, if you find it difficult to wrap your fingers around your teeth or don't have the time, you can use a holder-type floss that is easier to use.
There are flosses that are flavored with mint and other flavors, and some that have wax on them to make them easier to slide on, so it's fun to choose.
2. Leave it to us for those hard-to-reach areas! "Tuft Brush"

A regular toothbrush (left) and a tufted toothbrush (right). The difference in size is obvious.
Next, I would like to recommend the "Tuft Brush." Many people may not have heard of it, but it is a very useful item.
It is also ideal for people with uneven teeth or those who cannot brush the back of their molars such as wisdom teeth. Even for those who do not have uneven teeth, if you use it in a circular massage along the gums, it will activate the gums and remove dirt from the roots of the teeth, making it even more effective.
Doesn't this sound pleasant and refreshing? It has everything to offer.
Of course, even with a regular toothbrush, a compact, maneuverable head will reach more areas, leaving fewer areas unbrushed.
Protecting your health every day with your own hands
We have introduced a variety of things, but we think that busy businessmen are fighting against time every day. It is a hassle to use multiple items to brush your teeth every time.
During busy mornings and afternoons, just brush your teeth.
Try using one more item only at night for a thoroughly refreshing experience.
I think that's a good way to do it.
And as I wrote earlier, your dentist can help you with the parts that you cannot do yourself.

Together with my dental hygienist colleagues, we consider the best oral care method for each patient.
The most memorable words I have heard from a patient so far are when they told me, "I can smile now" in front of others. This patient said that after we removed the tartar and stains and tightened their gums, they were able to smile with confidence.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could maintain such good health every day with your own hands?
Since it's something you do every day anyway, why not change your mindset a little and enjoy the refreshing feeling by using your favorite items?
